I heard good things about this movie. IMDB has it as the #101 best movie of all time! It won 5 Oscars (including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screeplay) and was nominated for 5 more (including Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actor)!
And it was widely described as a hilarious comedy! Perhaps I was in a particularly sour mood while watching, but I emitted, to be generous, one chuckle during the entire 125-minute runtime.
Or maybe I was just prudish. For a movie released in 1960, it was kinda dirty. And (no spoilers, but) for a movie billed as a comedy, there's some pretty horrifying and despicable stuff, not played for laughs.
Or maybe I was averse to the movie's Commie-appealing take on American capitalism. That's probably a bum rap, but (come on) I thought the movie was kind of ham-handed in that area.
Also, despite the Amazon Eye Candy over on your right: it's monochrome.
Plot: Jack Lemmon plays C.C. Baxter, a schlub accountant working in a Manhattan beehive-like insurance company. As the movie opens, he's already loaning out his apartment many evenings to multiple sleazy co-workers who are cheating on their wives with office sluts. C.C. keeps getting promised that he'll be corruptly rewarded with perks at the office. But that doesn't actually happen until big boss/super-sleaze Sheldrake (Fred MacMurray) starts using his place for an assignation with elevator operator Fran Kubelik (Shirley MacLaine). Eventually, Baxter falls for Fran's ditzy charms. But their relationship is rocky.
Executive summary: Look at all the praise, you might enjoy it more than I did.
